Interpol recommends arrest warrants for former Iranian officials

WASHINGTON - Interpol's legal department has recommended issuing capture notices for five former Iranian officials in connection with the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Argentina, which killed 85 people, a U.S. lawmaker said Monday.
Argentina's government requested the capture notices - similar to arrest warrants - triggering anger in the Iranian government, which has denied any involvement in the bombing.
In a 16-page decision, the legal department of the international law-enforcement group recommended issuing the notices for five suspects but not for former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.
"The decision by Interpol to issue capture notices for those implicated in the `94 bombing upholds the integrity of the Argentine judicial inquiry which found sufficient evidence to bring criminal charges against these Iranian officials and their Hezbollah proxies," Florida Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said in a statement.
Iran can appeal the decision before Interpol's general secretariat.
Ros-Lehtinen urged Interpol to act expeditiously to implement its decision, so that "these fugitives will be compelled to answer for their alleged role in this terrorist attack."
The legal affairs department of Interpol recommended capture applications for these top former Iranian officials: Ali Fallahijan, the former minister of intelligence and security; Ahmad Vahidi, the former commander of the al-Quds Force, a special operations unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps; Mohsen Rezai, the former commander of the Revolutionary Guard; Mohsen Rabbani, the former cultural attache in the Iranian embassy in Buenos Aires; and Ahmad Reza Asghari, a former third secretary in the Buenos Aires embassy.
The bombing of the community center in Buenos Aires followed a bombing of the Israeli embassy in the Argentine capital, which left 29 dead, two years earlier.
